And I ultimately went back and got a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at George Washington University.IRA FLATOW: Mm-hm. And how many women were working with you at any one time? I’m trying to picture your atmosphere there. And I know, reading from the book, reading from Margot’s book, that back in the segregation days, there was sort of a dual life you were living, one as a computer, or an engineer, and then you would go into the cafeteria, and Margo, you talk about this in the book, and then there’d be a segregated area, where the women couldn’t sit with the white people.MARGOT LEE SHETTERLY: Yeah, just to be clear, the segregated era really lasted till the end of the NACA era. So really, when the first Black women started in 1943, they did have segregated bathrooms. They had a segregated cafeteria. And they actually worked in a segregated office, which was called the West Area Computing Office.But when the Russians launched Sputnik in 1957, which really precipitated the change of the NACA to NASA, the space agency that we know today, that’s really when the segregated facilities came to an end. And that happened 10 years before Dr. Darden got to the center.IRA FLATOW: You focus on just a few of these women– Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson. What about these women made their stories important to tell in this book?MARGOT LEE SHETTERLY: Well, first of all, they spent their entire careers– or finished their careers, I should say, because they started their careers as math teachers. But they finished their careers at the Langley Research Center. So it was possible to sort of trace the course of their careers as they fought to get promoted, as NASA started focusing on space and

1 reviewMarch 30, 2012This book, well, sounds cheesy, but it's like a bible to me. I wasn't even born when it was written, or when it was published, or when it was republished for that matter, but it is a delicate and mind-blowing blend of the spiritual and musical-genius of Michael that anyone of any age can appreciate. He was such a gentle person, and reading this, the delicate words seem to just lift off the page and calm me... Though it was written before all the problems, when all his money was in the fore-front, it is still very insightful into his deep insecurities. Michael is a hero to me; he stands up as a figure for anyone who is different. When he died those few years ago, I mourned him because of the huge loss the world has ever seen. I just felt it was such a shame that Hollywood pressured and crushed him so; it's the same cycle over and over, what with the lives of Marilyn Monroe, Freddie Mercury, Elvis, Amy Winehouse, Amy Winehouse and Michael all ending the same, seemingly inevitable way... I just desperately wish Michael hadn't fallen to it, because more than anyone he did not deserve to get lost that way, and that's what this book shows. He was sweet and highly generous; a man of the highest intellect and musical ability. This book represents the Michael fans know; the Michael that most of the world never get to see. This, though, was not because he didn't show it to us, but because most of us chose not to listen...Overall Michael, I love your book. Will keep my copy until I'm a grandma, maybe even give it to my grandchildren, along with my memories of you... In fact, I know I will.God Bless you. RIP Michael.29 reviews3 followersAugust 8, 2009I enjoyed reading Michael's words about his life up until 1985, which is where the book ended. I didn't want it to end, I wanted to read more about his life after that, but unfortunately, he did not write another book. Moonwalk describes his early life and his feelings of insecurity on a personal level and told of his father's heavy-handed discipline. He talked about not being able to have friends his own age unless they were in show business because all the other people he met, treated him like a celebrity -- always grabbing at him and wanting something other than friendship.Michael spent a lot of time alone, but he spent it wisely by perfecting his dancing and song writing skills which brought the world his wonderful music decade after decade. He discusses his changing appearance, skin conditions, and religion in his own words, which makes it easy reading for those who did not know much about him, and provides interesting tidbits that some who adore him did not know. Moonwalk is Michael's story of hard work, long days, and a wish to find someone he could trust to care about him

Not just in this book, but in everything I do now, which is not just for people to recognize the relationship and understand that the dogs are part of the family, but also to give themselves permission to kind of slow down and feel everything that they do feel.Because living with dogs that are upset 247 is hard. It's really, really hard. And too often there's criticism of people and there's an assumption in our society that if a dog is fearful or exhibit other behavior that may indicate that they're anxious, that something bad must have happened to them and it must be the people who did it. And very often that means that people don't go for help. They don't look for help. And what I want to say is, we're not judging you. We're not judging you. And I was thinking, okay, behavioral euthanasia can still be a little bit of a taboo topic, even amongst dog trainers who should be comfortable with these conversations, you know, so I want your thoughts on how does this not really serve dogs or their guardians, the fact that we keep this as a taboo subject, and how do we sort of have these conversations in while recognizing that the aversive crowd tends to sort of
