Bikini Bottom - SpongeBob SquarePants: The Battle For Bikini Bottom
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information During the PlayStation 2 era, licensed games were everywhere. Everything from The Simpsons to The Sopranos had video game tie-ins released on every platform under the sun, and it’s no surprise that the smash-hit cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants was a huge part of the licensed game craze. Several games centered around the yellow sponge and his aquatic friends have been released over the years, but none have as large a following as Battle for Bikini Bottom, which originally released in 2003. Amidst a sea of terrible licensed cash-ins, Battle for Bikini Bottom rose above the crowd and joined the likes of The Simpsons: Hit & Run and Spider-Man 2 in the good licensed video games club. Now, Battle for Bikini Bottom is back with a fresh coat of paint, but its barely above average skeleton still remains. SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is an incredibly faithful remake of the original, for better and for worse. Before getting into the nitty-gritty of platforming, controls, combat, and all that, I have to preface this review by saying that I played and loved the original Battle for Bikini Bottom when it launched all those years ago. Normally, that wouldn’t factor in that much if this were a remake of a best-selling all-time classic that is practically universally adored, but Battle for Bikini Bottom hasn’t received a huge amount of recognition post-release. The only problem is, for some reason, he put a switch on the back of the machine that says "Obey Plankton" and "Don't Obey" and left it on "Don't Obey". So the Robots over-run the Chum Bucket and ransack Bikini Bottom. Meanwhile, SpongeBob and Patrick were playing "Robots and Racehorses" when SpongeBob says "I wish we could have real robots to play with." Patrick suggests putting the toy into his magic conch shell, because when he put the last bite of his cookie in and wished for more cookies, and it turned in to a "lots of little cookie crumbs".SpongeBob wakes up the next morning and his house has been vandalized, so he goes out to see what happened. The short answer is: yes, it does. While the original game was a purely single-player affair, Purple Lamp Studios' remake added a brand new two-player horde mode. Here, players work together to get through over 20 islands, each featuring waves of enemies and hazards to overcome. It can be played split-screen or online. The gameplay differs slightly from the base game in the sense that the multiplayer mode is played from an isometric perspective. There are several characters from the iconic Nickelodeon series to pick from. These consist of mainstays like SpongeBob and Patrick, to more bizarre inclusions like Mr. Krabs and Gary the snail. Each has unique movesets inspired by the TV show, so it's great to see that the developers truly appreciate the source material.Unfortunately, there is no co-op for the single-player campaign, just like the original. Therefore, players who wish to team up with a buddy will have to stick to the horde mode. What is SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated about? Keeping in line with the series' lore and humor, the evil genius Plankton once again attempts to steal Krusty Krab's Krabby Patty secret formula. He develops a contraption called the Duplicatotron 3000 that can churn out robots to aid his takeover plan. However, things take a wrong turn when he realizes the robots are set to disobey their maker, eventually causing havoc all over Bikini Bottom. Visually, it is an Unreal Engine 4 game that brings an almost cel-shaded look to its vibrant environments as well as the denizens of the underwater city. Players control the protagonist SpongeBob, as well as a few other characters like Patrick the starfish and Sandy the squirrel. Players run, jump, platform, and attack foes across colorful levels inspired by the beloved show. Given its collectathon nature, there are many collectibles to find, bosses to defeat, and secrets to uncover. The writing and characters all maintain the comedic nature of the show for a truly authentic experience. What platforms is SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated on?SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated is a multi-platform game. Games used to be like in the early 2000s (a certain ball section in the Mermalair comes to mind). Moments like these made me appreciate modern platformers like Super Mario Odyssey or A Hat in Time so much more, and they also reminded me why Battle for Bikini Bottom ultimately failed to receive widespread appreciation outside of its cult following. This game has a bevy of strange design decisions, frustrating level design and checkpoints, and sections that are straight-up annoying. Battle for Bikini Bottom excels in areas outside of gameplay, however, and that’s arguably the main reason it’s beloved by so many. The game absolutely nails the atmosphere of the show. The writing is just as sharp and witty as the early seasons of the cartoon, and the voice acting is superb with most of the original actors reprising their roles for the game. Unfortunately, Clancy Brown didn’t voice Mr. Krabs in the original, and he hasn’t returned for the role in Rehydrated either, but performances are solid all around, even those that had to fill in for others. Battle for Bikini Bottom’s jokes wouldn’t feel out of place in the show, and that’s a badge of honor it should wear proudly considering the sheer amount of memorable quotes from the first few seasons of the show that are still circulated online today. Still, writing and dialogue are not the central focus of a platformer, so moments spent with the show’s colorful cast of characters are fleeting, separated by extendedComments
