Part of being able to forecast comes from reading the sky, because so much of what’s taking place in the atmosphere can be seen visually. When I worked the forecast counter in the Air Force, I occasionally stepped over to the window for a quick look while filling out the weather briefing forms. The pilots often caught notice of this. I remember one B-1B Lancer pilot who turned to his fellow crewmembers and said, “Now that’s what I like to see! This forecaster doesn’t miss anything.”When taking in visual clues, forecasters look for signs of wind behavior, dust plumes, haze layers, patches of fog, unusual phenomena on the horizon, and the general appearance and color of the sky. But we most rely on the clouds and how they’re shaped and textured. When clouds are present there’s a lot of information at hand, and that’s what we’ll look at here.There are ten basic cloud types: cumulus, stratus, cumulonimbus, stratocumulus, nimbostratus, altostratus, altocumulus, cirrus, cirrostratus, and cirrocumulus. You’re probably already at least passingly familiar with these, and FAA AC 00-6B, Aviation Weather, touches on these different categories. Rather than sorting out clouds individually, we’ll take a slightly different approach and break down some of the common skyscapes that pilots encounter while flying.Fair-Weather CumulusThe fair-weather cumulus sky is marked by weakly vertical cumulus clouds with flat bases and high layer altitudes during the afternoon. Fair weather cumulus are quite common during the summertime in moderately stable air masses, in other words, where the lapse rate is weak and the temperature doesn’t fall very much with height. Weak lapse rates are often associated with an upper-level high. On winds-aloft charts you may see an anticyclone, or anticyclonic flow. Conditions above 10-20,000 feet MSL may be a bit warmer than usual.These highs are typically subtropical highs, such as those associated with the Bermuda High. As semi-permanent features, they’ll often park themselves over a region for weeks, giving the same weather day after day. On rare occasion the highs are cutoff highs, such as the one associated with the record-setting heat wave in the Pacific Northwest this past June. Those types of highs are much more short-lived, and after a few days, the weather reverts to more of a fastchanging, transitional pattern.If lapse rates are steeper, instead of fair weather cumulus we get skies filled with moderate cumulus (MDT CU) and towering cumulus (TCU). These are the last stages before showers and thunderstorms. Lower cloud heights than would otherwise be expected, and bases that remain ragged and fail to flatten out over time, are good indicators that conditions are deteriorating.CumulonimbusThe cumulonimbus cloud is the ultimate form of deep convection, in which a cumulus cloud grows through much of the troposphere while maintaining both an inflow that feeds the updraft, and outflow produced by precipitation. The photo on the top-right of the next page shows what happens below the base of a cumulonimbus cloud.Contrast this with a lot of photos you see on cloud charts showing the Modern weather forecasts rely on complex computer simulators. These simulators use all the physics equations that describe the atmosphere, including the movement of air, the sun’s warmth, and the formation of clouds and rain.Incremental improvements in forecasts over time mean that modern five-day weather forecasts are as skillful as three-day forecasts were 20 years ago.But you don’t need a supercomputer to predict how the weather above your head is likely to change over the next few hours—this has been known across cultures for millennia. By keeping an eye on the skies above you, and knowing a little about how clouds form, you can predict whether rain is on the way.And moreover, a little understanding of the physics behind cloud formation highlights the complexity of the atmosphere, and sheds some light on why predicting the weather beyond a few days is such a challenging problem.So here are six clouds to keep an eye out for, and how they can help you understand the weather. Clouds form when air cools to the dew point, the temperature at which the air can no longer hold all its water vapor. At this temperature, water vapor condenses to form droplets of liquid water, which we observe as a cloud. For this process to happen, we require air to be forced to rise in the atmosphere, or for moist air to come into contact with a cold surface.On a sunny day, the sun’s radiation heats the land, which in turn heats the air just above it. This warmed air rises by convection and forms Cumulus. These “fair weather” clouds look like cotton wool. Usually sunny, days. They have rounded, puffy tops with flat, sometimes dark, bottoms, and they are bright white when lit by the sun. They usually indicate good weather, but beware, they can quickly turn into a thunderstorm under the right conditions. StratusThese clouds usually sit low in the sky, hiding the clouds above them. They are flat and grey, sometimes bringing a slight drizzle. Fog is simply stratus clouds which have come down to ground level. When you walk through fog, you’re actually in a stratus cloud.Stratocumulus Stratocumulus is a sort of combination of a cumulus cloud and a stratus cloud. As stratus clouds break apart, they start to form cumulus clouds. And as cumulus clouds cling together, they become stratus clouds. The time in between the formation of a cumulus cloud or a stratus cloud is called a stratocumulus cloud. These clouds are low, puffy, and either grey or white and they will have patches of blue sky between them. From underneath, they look a little like a honeycomb. They are most commonly found on cloudy, overcast days.Altostratus The altostratus clouds lay in the middle of the low water-based clouds and the higher ice-based clouds. These clouds are usually lighter and thinner than stratus clouds and if you look at them carefully, you may be able to see the suns rays shining through them. These clouds tend to turn the sky into a grey or bluish-grey color and look more like a sheet covering the sky instead of cotton ball style clouds. They tend to form just before a warm or cold front.Cirrus These clouds are the highest in the sky and made entirely of ice. They appear wispy in the sky, much like their name suggests, which is Latin for “curl of hair.” They are thin and white The dew point. Cumulus clouds do not generally rain—you’re in for fine weather.2) CumulonimbusWhile small Cumulus do not rain, if you notice Cumulus getting larger and extending higher into the atmosphere, it’s a sign that intense rain is on the way. This transition indicates that the cloud is no longer made of water droplets, but ice crystals. When gusts of wind blow water droplets outside the cloud, they rapidly evaporate in the drier environment, giving water clouds a very sharp edge. On the other hand, ice crystals carried outside the cloud do not quickly evaporate, giving a wispy appearance.Cumulonimbus are often flat-topped. Within the Cumulonimbus, warm air rises by convection. In doing so, it gradually cools until it is the same temperature as the surrounding atmosphere. At this level, the air is no longer buoyant so cannot rise further. Instead it spreads out, forming a characteristic anvil shape. Cirrus form very high in the atmosphere. They are wispy, being composed entirely of ice crystals falling through the atmosphere. If Cirrus are carried horizontally by winds moving at different speeds, they take a characteristic hooked shape. Only at very high altitudes or latitudes do Cirrus produce rain at ground level.But if you notice that Cirrus begins to cover more of the sky, and gets lower and thicker, this is a good indication that a warm front is approaching. In a warm front, a warm and a cold air mass meet. The lighter warm air is forced to rise over the cold air mass, leading to cloud formation.
