Clean voice quality and consistent performance even on Linux systems has fueled its meteoric rise.However, one area where Skype and Zoom still hold an edge is customization of video calls. Fortunately, Discord has been enhancing personalization capabilities – including finally rolling out custom video backgrounds!Why Do Custom Video Backdrops Matter?During 2022, background customization rose as one of the most desired features for video chat apps. According to Lifewire‘s annual video conferencing surveys, over 60% of users want more substantial and convenient background options.Being able to change your backdrop elevates self-expression and prevents revealing private environments. Utilizing memes or themed imagery also helps spark conversations!Discord‘s introduction of uploadable background images/videos brings its settings on par with leading enterprise tools. Applying custom backdrops is essential functionality expected from modern chat platforms.Let‘s explore exactly how to access background customization on Discord for next-level calls!Step 1: Launch Discord and Initiate SettingsFirst, open the Discord application on your Linux desktop or Windows PC. Steam and Discord are my main chat apps, and not being able to pop out DM windows in Discord makes using it for chat while also remaining active in channels very inconvenient compared to Steam, which allows a separate window for each chat, and/or a multi-tab window. Hey Discord Devs, I’m writing to once again request pop-out chat and multi-chat view features. This would allow users to pop out any text channel into a separate window and monitor/chat in multiple servers simultaneously. At the bottom of the screen, there are two buttons: one with a monitor and an arrow inside of it, and one with a camera.If you want to share your screen, which you can do by clicking on the former, but have multiple of them, you will get to select which screen you’d like to share. Also, if you prefer just sharing the screen of an open app, you can do that as well.Even if you want to go to screen sharing from application sharing and back, Discord has you covered. You can do this during screen sharing by clicking on its icon.Some More OptionsDiscord has even more options to help you use it to its fullest potential. Another thing you can do while in a video call is expanding the view down, or in other words, expanding the chat so it takes as much Discord’s space as it can.To focus on a certain person’s screen or video, you can click on their window. This will make the app focus on them and push everyone else to the side.Speaking of focus, there are two arrows going in opposite directions in the bottom-right corner.
