I am going to buy a torque converter to push the cart up these hills but I NEED advice (a little specific). If any of you guys out there could tell me the ideal torque converter size for this engine and terrain. Also, I need specific suggestions for the best sprocket, chain, and gear size (the gear on the jack shaft that goes to the sprocket) for the terrain for the best power to speed ratio. I'm sorta looking for a jack shaft that is part of the engine mount plate. It's a lot to ask but I'm new to this stuff, have a tight budget, and am pressed on time. Thank you guys for all the help so far. It's been really helpful. A response would be GREATLY GREATLY appreciated! #2 Well for the 11 hp motor your going to want a comet 40 series tq converter as for gearing I would try to run a 7:1 or lower since its going to be on hilly terrain and 40/41 size chai. And for your gearing there is a gear ratio calculator on affordablegokarts website on the right side to help get close to the sprockets sizes you need one thing to keep in mind is ground clearance tho #3 Thanks so much for your response. It's been pretty overwhelming building this kart without help in my town. I'm just wondering though, if you're suggesting to have a 7:1 gear ratio, you're telling me to have like a 12 toothed clutch/torque converter and and 72 toothed sprocket, right? I also feel like the 40 series is a bit too heavy duty, and expensive, what's the next step down from that with a 1" bore? #4 So I've researched a little on torque converters and sizes of them and how they work. I was thinking I should go with a less heavy duty torque converter so I don't have to go through the pain of making my own jack shaft because I've seen torque converters with an attached jack shaft setup unless they don't make them anymore (so I don't have to weld one to my frame). Do they still make those for this kind of engine?Comments

2025-04-10I was just wondering which part you saying was expensive. You answered my question. Thanks so much for your help!Landuse, I think I'll use the 7:1 gear ratio you suggested with the 10 tooth gear on the jack shaft and the 72 tooth sprocket on the axle. I'll leave some room on the engine mounting plate to bolt on the jack shaft (3/4" axle) and had everything (torque converter/gear on jack shaft) on one side like your jack shaft you showed me. I think ill use a 40# chain too. All said and done, how does that sound to you? That sounds good to me. You might have to elevate the jackshaft a little but so that if you put the driven on, it will clear the engine mount. I hadto do this with mine. You can see from my pics how both mine as well as mckutzy's JS are positioned a bit higher than the mount for sprocket/driven clearance DSC09531.jpg 95.7 KB · Views: 24 26062011487.jpg 113.6 KB · Views: 13 #17 Yeah I see what you mean. However, i may not have to elevate the jack shaft if I'm going to have everything on one side (torque converter and driven) because that side will be hanging over the edge of the engine mount almost over the sprocket but if you think so i may do for good measure. #18 I think ill use a 40# chain too. All said and done, how does that sound to you? keep in mind that #40 chain has a 1/2" pitch (distance between teeth) where #35 is only 3/8". That translates to #40 sprockets being larger than #35 sprockets:#40 72t sprocket will have a diameter of 11.5"#35 72t sprocket will have a diameter of 8.6"Having said that, it all comes down to what size sprocket will fit on a 3/4" shaft... #19 Well I'm using a 1" axle for the 72 toothed sprocket along with the 10 toothed on the driven (which is on the 3/4" jack shaft). What chain size/ diameter of (72 toothed) sprocket do you suggest me getting along with the 10 toothed driven on the jack shaft? #20 A 72t will be fine but, how high are your tyres?
