WOW! I had never played an Ys game before so I really wasn't sure what to expect, but I was completely blown away. I'm very glad that I didn't rush through or put it down to start Octopath Traveler immediately upon its release date, because the true ending of Ys VIII was definitely worth seeing. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think I enjoyed Ys VIII slightly more than Breath of the Wild. I certainly recognize that BoTW is a technically superior game in many ways, but I just had more fun playing Ys VIII. The story was more interesting, the characters more compelling, the combat mechanics more satisfying, and the party system & other RPG elements were very well done. In some respects, Ys VIII felt more like a traditional Zelda game than BoTW did. Don't get me wrong -- I'm a lifelong fan of the Zelda franchise and I liked BoTW quite a lot -- I just think I liked Ys VIII a bit more. Experience will be… well, experienced. I’ve also been doing some playing around with the battle system. Previously, enemies needed to have their weakness hit twice to be stunned for a turn, but to be honest, I never really liked how it felt, especially in the later hours of the game. I’m experimenting to have it function a bit more like Octopath Traveler, where instead of two hits, it simply varies per enemy, with the baseline being one hit, and bosses and stronger enemies naturally needing more. There’s also multiple ways to hit an enemy’s weakness too, such as using character’s weapons, similar to the Fire Emblem series.With that being said, the game’s still a bit too easy for my liking. I’m not intending it to kick the player’s ass constantly, but as it stands now, it’s too much of a cakewalk if you really know what you’re doing. Part of the problem is that the player simply has too much power, with not enough counters for the enemies to use against you besides dealing a buttload of damage. The “Charm” system does allow for some opportunities like that, though. I’ll do a more in-depth post about how it works another time, but essentially Charms allow you to equip new skills and passive abilities on a party member, including elemental affinities. (If you’ve played them, they’re a bit similar to how “Abilities” in Kingdom Hearts and “Badges” in Paper Mario work) With those elemental charms, they allow you to add and. I feel like this game is not talked about enough or at all. The story is amazing, and the character development is what makes this game so great. You really get into this game after just a few hours in, though the beginning is somewhat slow to start. There's a good amount of customizing that can be done, clothing, abilities, etc. It's pretty open world to an extent, and many side quests to do. The game is not that difficult, but it does give you a challenge. I put in 60+ hours to 100% this game, and I don't regret it at all. One of the best games I've played in a really long time. The graphics are probably the weak point of this game, but don't blame it on the switch because it was originally made for the PS vita from my understanding and then ported over. Doesn't look much better on the PS4 either believe me. You definitely want to pick this game up because you'd probably get a couple play throughs out of it.
