Why, after so many years of trouble-free browsing? I have plenty of memory, what is the problem? blackbird71 last edited by You probably mean a 32-bit notebook. What Opera version is causing the problem and what was the last Opera version that worked properly? How long has the error problem been occurring? Depending on what you mean by "so many years", are you comparing with Opera 12 or earlier? When you state you have "plenty of memory", how much is that - both in terms of what you believe is physically installed and according to what Windows system information readout says is installed? (Memory chips have been known to fail and 'disappear' from functional use.) A Former User last edited by Hi, I use the latest version of Opera, regularly checking for updates. The problem started about six months ago, intermittently but in the last few weeks is every time I am online. Windows Control panel tells me I have 2Gb of RAM installed. blackbird71 @Guest last edited by blackbird71 @elpocito Do you have any extensions installed into Opera, and (if so), which ones?Try opening Opera to a single tab with few or no graphics; in Windows, open the Task Manager and see how much RAM Opera is consuming. With no user-installed extensions, it should be under 200 MB. If it's under that, use Windows Task Manager to see whether there are other apps consuming RAM (besides Task Manager itself). If Opera is using much more than 200 MB, within Opera, hit Shift-Esc to activate Opera's internal Task Manager to see where the RAM usage is occurring for Opera's own processes.Given that Win7 wants around 1 GB to run smoothly, you've got about 1 GB of your total RAM left to run everything else on your computer (apps, background utility programs, etc). If those other things combine to near or hit 1 GB of RAM consumption, your system and/or apps will slow or freeze. If your Opera installation has a corrupted user profile, too many extensions, many tabs open (especially graphics/Flash/animation-rich ones), etc., it can conceivably be hitting your available RAM limit. A Former User last edited by No extensions. I opened the Opera Task Manager and there's about 700Mb of activity there with just Yahoo Mail open in one tab, so I see what you mean about reaching my limit on RAM, will have to upgrade the notebook (nine years old) for something more appropriate. Only users with topic management privileges can see it. last edited by leocg I have both the Opera and Opera GX browsers.Opera Version: 69.0.3686.77andOpera GX Version: LVL2 (core: 68.0.3618.197)In the Opera browser, when I go to the Extensions Manager, and go to a certain extension, and try to uncheck the "Hide from Toolbar" option, I find that it no longer there, and missing.I opened both browsers, and took screen shots of my Adblock Plus extension, to show you what I am talking about.Opera - Adblock Plus Extention - Details Page: GX - Adblock Plus Extention - Details Page: appears to be a problem with the #extensions-toolbar-menu flag, which disables the icon that lists all of your extensions. I have this flag disabled on both of my Opera, and Opera GX, browsers, and it has worked beautifully, and had never been a problem, until Opera updated itself recently. I disabled that flag, then I would just go to each individual extension, and uncheck the "Hide from Toolbar" option if I wanted them to show on the Extensions Toolbar Menu. I can't do that anymore, because "Hide from Toolbar" option, has been removed from all of the extensions.I also expect that this problem will replicate itself, when Opera GX next updates. When I try to Enable the #extensions-toolbar-menu flag, it no longer works either. It doesn't put the icon, that lists the extensions, back on the Extensions Toolbar Menu. So, I can't access it that way either. In interesting
2025-04-03Update: Opera now supports Chrome extensions by default. You don’t need a third-party addon to use Chrome extensions in Opera. It’s no surprise that Chrome has become a memory-hogging browser. The initial promise of a faster and simpler browser no longer holds true. A few people argue that Opera is better alternative to Chrome because it is lightweight and has the same efficiency as Chrome with the Webkit-derived Blink rendering engine. When I decided to make the long-due transition, Opera’s extensions weren’t able to compete with Chrome’s ever-growing web store. Thankfully, now you can use any Chrome extension on Opera without any hassles. To get started, install this extension on Opera which won’t take much time given the 36KB size.Once done, head over to the desired Chrome extension page, and voila! There’s now a button stating “Add to Opera” along with a little red basket icon on the address bar. Click either one of them to start downloading. As soon as the extension download finishes, Opera will alert that the extension is disabled because it is from an unknown source. You can safely ignore that and hit “Go” to open the extensions manager page on opera. Locate your extension on that page and tap “Install” which will pop out another frame notifying you about the permissions required, tap “Install” again to complete the installation. That’s it, you’re done. The extensions will work exactly how they would function on Chrome. This “Download Chrome Extension” is definitely a lifesaver.Google Chrome is a fantastic feature-rich browser, however, due to the inconsistent RAM consumption and occasional crashes, users have no choice other than to move on. Agreed that you won’t get multiple profiles, but you can do away with multiple sign-ins. I chose Opera and have been using it as my primary browser. It works flawlessly and now, I’ve
