Large datasets or run multiple tests, as it allows them to focus on interpreting results rather than on data entry and manipulation.I was also impressed with QI Macros SPC’s support for statistical process control (SPC). It’s especially helpful for users working in quality management or production monitoring. QI Macros provides easy-to-use tools for implementing SPC techniques essential for monitoring and controlling processes in manufacturing, healthcare, and service sectors.Another reason why I like QI Macros SPC Add-in for Excel is because of its statistical tools like control charts, Pareto charts, regression analysis, and hypothesis testing. The wide range of functionality and intuitive interface make it a go-to solution for individuals involved in Six Sigma and lean manufacturing processes. While QI Macros SPC offers a wide range of predefined charts and reports, I sometimes found adjusting or tailoring these features to their specific needs difficult. This lack of flexibility can be challenging, especially when working with highly specific data or niche applications. If you use other data analysis tools, such as R, Python, or specialized software, you may find it inconvenient to work within Excel just to take advantage of QI Macros' functionality. I also didn’t like how the performance of QI Macros slows down when working with very large data sets. While Excel is generally efficient with data handling, adding complex statistical analysis tasks can lead to lag, especially when processing high-dimensional data sets. What I like about QI Macros SPC Add-in for Excel:I love how it simplifies complex statistical processes and integrates seamlessly into Excel. This eliminates the need for separate software and significantly reduces the learning curve.I appreciate its automation of tedious tasks like chart generation and data processing, which saves time and allows me to focus on interpreting results rather than manual calculations. What I like about QI Macros SPC Add-in for Excel:“The best feature I like about QI Macros is the visual analysis with the help of tables and charts. The way it analyses raw data to provide key insights into uncharted business opportunities is delightful. Also, anyone unsure of the tool initially can opt for a 30-day trial which gives the user access to all the benefits and features the software offers.”- QI Macros SPC Add-in for Excel Review, Mithin M.What I dislike about QI Macros SPC Add-in for Excel:I dislike the lack of flexibility when adjusting or tailoring predefined charts and reports. It can be frustrating when working with specific or niche data requirements.I find the performance issues with very large datasets disappointing. The lag during complex analysis tasks is inconvenient and disrupts workflow efficiency. What G2 users dislike about QI Macros SPC Add-in for Excel:“The add-in requires a purchase, which could be seen as a barrier for users or organizations Applications for QI Macros Templates Did you know that QI Macros has a Lean Six Sigma template for most of its charts including the pareto chart, histogram and every control chart? To access these templates click on the QI Macros menu and then click on Fill-in-the Blanks-Templates then SPC Charts. Following is a case study which provides some ideas on how to use the templates. Case Study - Measuring Reduction in Mortality Rates One health care group initiated a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to respond to the 100,000 lives challenge (save an extra 100,000 lives in the next year). Studies by the IHI.org found that 48% of deaths occurred outside of the ICU for non-comfort care. The goal is to prevent cardiac arrest by detecting the most common warning signs (acute changes in heart rate, systolic BP, respiration rate, saturation, O2, or conscious state) and taking immediate action. For the team to measure its effectiveness, it needs to know: How many "codes" (i.e., cardiac arrests) occur per 1000 discharges. How many codes occur outside of the ICU Use of the rapid response team Using the templates in QI Macros, it was easy to set up these measures. Calculating Codes/1000 Discharges: I opened an Excel spreadsheet and typed in the key inputs for each of the three measures. I used a formula in D3 to calculate the codes/1000 discharges. The formulas is =SUM(B3/C3). I then copied the formula down into the other rows below. XmR Chart Template: Using QI Macros, I went into the Fill in the Blank Templates then SPC Charts then XmR Four Pack. This template has all of the working information I need to graph the codes/1000. Minitab's standout features are clear and visually appealing graphs, charts, and reports. I appreciate the software transforming complex data into easily understandable visuals like histograms, scatter plots, and control charts. I was also impressed with how Minitab supports data import in various file formats, including Excel, CSV, and databases. This flexibility allowed us to integrate the software seamlessly into our existing workflows without data reformatting or preprocessing. I wasn’t happy about how Minitab Statistical Software doesn’t support macOS. Minitab primarily caters to Windows users, so we had to rely on virtualization software like Parallels or dual-boot systems such as Boot Camp to access the program. These workarounds can be inconvenient, costly, and time-consuming.I have also found Minitab insufficient for predictive modeling, natural language processing, or deep learning. This statistical analysis software lacks the advanced machine learning algorithms and programming flexibility competitors like R or Python offer. Moreover, we have also faced challenges during the licensing and installation process. Issues like unclear billing terms or difficulties activating licenses weren’t easy to deal with. What I like about Minitab Statistical Software:I like the comprehensive range of statistical tools it offers. Access to regression, ANOVA, and hypothesis testing all in one place saves time and eliminates the need for additional software.Another highlight for me is the clear and visually appealing graphs and charts. I appreciate how they simplify complex data into visuals that are easy to interpret, like scatter plots and control charts. What G2 users like about Minitab Statistical Software:“It can do most any type of statistical analysis relatively well. It is a broad package that offers many different tools, and thus a very practical and powerful tool for a practicing statistician, engineer, or others engaged in data analysis and statistical application.”- Minitab Statistical Software Review, Kerry S.What I dislike about Minitab Statistical Software:I dislike that it doesn’t support macOS natively. Having to rely on virtualization software or dual-boot systems is inconvenient and adds unnecessary cost and complexity.I do not like its limited capabilities for advanced machine learning tasks like predictive modeling or deep learning. It feels outdated compared to the flexibility and power of tools like R or Python. What G2 users dislike about Minitab Statistical Software:5. Until a black plus sign appears. Drag the plus sign all the way to cell E20 to copy the mean.Note: LCL= lower control limit typically is 3 standard deviations away from the average which is mean-3 times the standard deviation.SELECT Sample Measures, Mean(CL), LCL and UCL.Click on Insert tab, click on Line Chart and then Click on Line. You have created your chart. Resize it. Remove the small black lines by double clicking on them and pressing Delete. That’s it, you’re done. This is what your final chart will look like.Your Statistical process control chart is ready. The process appears to be in control, as all sample measures fall within the established control limits.Note that these steps are just a general guideline and that the specific steps and calculations used to create an SPC control chart may vary depending on the type of control chart used and the methodology followed. It’s important to consult a knowledgeable statistician or quality engineer for guidance on creating an SPC control chart for a specific process. For data that is not normally distributed, consider using alternative control charts, such as those based on medians or individual measurements.. Two values that are often reported for process capability: Cpk and Ppk. The only difference between them is the way that the standard deviation is estimated. Cpk uses the standard deviation estimated from a range control chart. Ppk simply uses the calculated standard deviation from all the data (e.g., using the STDEV function in Excel). If the process is in statistical control, Cpk and Ppk will be very close. The value of Ppk in Figure 2 is 0.78. This is significantly different from the 1.21 value for Cpk. This is an indication that the supplier’s process is not in statistical control. Yes, you can compare Cpk and Ppk to get a “feel” for the state of control of a process. But in the end, you have to plot the data. And you should always do that in control chart format whenever possible.Control ChartsAlways, always chart the data over time. This is a key to understanding what is happening in your supplier’s process – and what it could be doing to your processes. If you are new to control charts, please refer to one of our many newsletter articles on control charts, e.g., the purpose of control charts. The control chart for the density data in Table 1 is shown in the figure below. The individuals (X-mR) control chart was used. Only the X chart is shown here. It was made using the SPC for Excel software.Figure 3: X Chart for Density DataThis chart shows something unexpected. The histogram and process capability analysis did not reveal any big issues – a few concerns perhaps. But this control chart shows that there has been a significant shift in the supplier’s process. There is a long run below the average until about shipment 17. Then there is a long run above the average. Both of these are out of control situations – and are shown as red points. Something has happened to cause the process to shift upward. In fact, it looks like a new process is now established. Figure 4 shows the control chart with split control limits and confirms that there has been a process shift.Figure 4: X Chart with Split Control Limits for Density DataThe new process appears to have any average of about 43.26 compared to old average of 40.7. Does this represent a new process from the supplier? Only way to find out is to ask the supplier. But now you know when the shift occurred – and you can compare the events in your process to see if this change in density impacted your process. But to do that, you must be monitoring your supplier’s performance – using more than just the COA.SummaryYou rely on your suppliers to provide you raw materials. Of course, you want the raw material to meet your specifications. But in reality, you should want more. You should want raw material that meets your specifications and is consistent and predictable, i.e., in statistical control. You can use histograms, process capability and control charts to “judge”Comments
